About New Energy Economy and 1Sky NM

IntroductionAspen looking up

New Energy Economy is dedicated to creating opportunities for New Mexico by developing solutions to global warming.

With abundant renewable energy resources and innovative building technologies, New Mexico has an extraordinary opportunity to benefit by creating a new direction for energy in America. New Mexico also can help our country become energy independent by becoming a leading exporter of clean renewable energy and new energy technologies.

1Sky is an effort to galvanize a more powerful climate movement. It is not a new institution or even a coalition. Its purpose is to communicate a positive vision and a clear, simple set of goals and policy initiatives that are commensurate with the scale of the climate challenge, and to build the necessary power to solve global warming and put America on a new path for energy.

Scientific Context

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Emily CogginsChange (IPCC)  - a panel of 1200 well respected scientists from throughout the world, has determined that vast areas of the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Siberian permafrost are melting and that dramatic changes in global sea levels are imminent if global warming emissions are not dramatically reduced in the coming years. The IPCC has recommended a 25% reduction of global warming emissions below 1990 levels by the year 2020.

Need for this Campaign

Americans seem ready to respond to the challenge, and the Obama administration has demonstrated that addressing climate change is a high priority. Our nation needs to be on something akin to war footing with a society-wide mobilization to immediately halt and reduce carbon emissions. We must lead by example and then rapidly negotiate climate protection agreements with China, India and other nations. The 1Sky campaign will provide a unified set of clear proposals for action that are commensurate with the scale and urgency of the global warming challenge.

Opportunity

New Mexico is now in a unique position to advance global warming policy in theWind turbine construction United States.  The state is the first with an economy based heavily on the fossil fuel industry to address global warming, and New Mexico Senators Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman are shaping federal policy.

In Washington DC, there are many politically popular energy and climate plans competing for attention. Yet despite substantial progress, we do not yet have a package of policy solutions with the elements necessary to transform our society quickly enough to prevent dangerous climate change.
