New Mexico Can Win the New Energy Race

Cities like San Francisco, Seattle, and Boston are all thriving because they invested in the computer and internet revolutions. The race to develop the next technology market is on—and this market is about energy.

Many states, including California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Pennsylvania all have proactive public policies that promote new energy technologies.

New Mexico now needs strategic and well-coordinated public policies to help develop new energy technologies and resources.

Solar Technology

The U.S. once had more than half of the cumulative capacity for solar energy but Japan and Europe have surged ahead over the last decade.

Because of targeted policies and initiatives in Japan, five of the top ten solar manufacturers are Japanese.

Wind Technology

The United States had the majority of wind capacity until the early 1990's but the rest of the world has been racing ahead. he government in Denmark has fosterd and supported local industries and the tiny country of  Denmark now controls half of the market share of wind turbines (more than $8 billion a year).

Other states are working to develop new energy resources. Governor Pataki has set the goal of making New York the nation's leader in renewable energy technologies, and New Jersey is working to become the "solar energy capital of the world."
