Transportation Policy Initiatives

The average fuel economy standard for cars has been stuck at 27.5 miles-per-gallon for almost twenty years, and consequently cars in America today get worse mileage than they did in 1987.

New Energy Economy is working to ensure that New Mexico promotes the most fuel efficient vehicles in the country, and more specifically that our vehicles become 40% cleaner and more efficient by 2020.

We are calling for:

  • A strong vehicle efficiency standard that would help our vehicles get more miles per gallon.
  • A "Renewable Fuels Standard" that would direct gas stations to offer fuels with 10% ethanol (E10),  85% Ethanol (E85), and 20% Biodiesel (B20)
  • A broad package of financial incentives for installation of biofuels retailing and production facilities.
  • The use of alternative fuel vehicles in municipal fleets such as compressed natural gas, E85, propane and biodiesel.
  • Expansion and support of public transportation including bike lanes, trails, rail, and carpooling programs.

“We don't need pie-in-the-sky hydrogen scenarios that are 20 years out. We don't have that kind of time. Plug-in hybrids could get up to 150 miles per gallon. And since electricity is comparatively cheap, you would get the functional equivalent of 50-cent-a-gallon gasoline.”

Jim Woolsey, former Director of the CIA
