Regional Development Corporation has surveyed approximately 50 school districts in the eastern plains of New Mexico to assess which ones have the highest costs of electricity, which are in solid wind resource areas, and which are interested in developing a wind turbine project in their respective school district to reduce their overall cost of electricity in the long term.
Tucumcari School District may be the first pilot project for this initiative, although there are other alternatives. Regional Development Corporation is the primary driver in this initiative, though partnerships are being formed with the Coalition for Clean Affordable Energy and National Renewable Energy Lab's Wind Powering America program.
Goal: energy audit conducted at one school and wind turbine installed. Expected completion: Summer 2007.
