“We see governors and mayors across the nation taking action on climate change, and yet in Washington, the special interests rule. But they won't rule forever.”
-
Sen. John McCain |
Across the world, political leaders are calling
for immediate action to curb global warming emissions.
Fifteen states are now working on global warming
including New Mexico, Montana, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, Pennsylvania,
Maryland, the District of Columbia, California, Oregon, and
Arizona.
New Mexico is one of the leaders in this effort and has proposed
responsible and bold
targets to reduce global warming emissions that will meet
the challenge of global warming. If other countries, states,
and the U.S. Federal Government reduced emissions like New Mexico
proposes, we would solve the problem of global warming.
Right now, the State of New Mexico has convened
Stakeholders from business and industry, from the universities,
and from advocacy organizations to develop the specific policies
to meet the targets laid out in Gov. Richardson's Executive
Order.
New Mexico also has important and visible political leadership at the Federal level that could shape national and international policy. Senators Domenici and Bingaman recently released a White Paper on Global Warming and pushed for a Sense of the Senate Resolution on global warming.
More than 150 cities have signed on to the Cities for Climate Protection. In New Mexico, Mayor Martin Chavez is now making a major push to develop new energy future in Albuquerque. In the coming year, New Energy Economy will be looking to other New Mexican cities to join this important effort.
As New Mexico is the first energy producing state to commit to reducing global warming emissions, the international community is watching closely hoping that other states will follow our lead.
We need your help in making sure that the State adopts the
important recommendations from this process. You can help
by joining the Campaign for a New Energy Economy.
