Energy is the basis of our economy. It is not sufficient to trade out fossil fuel and nuclear energy for renewables. We must also fundamentally shift the WAY our energy development occurs - deliberately designing the transition to redress historical wrongs, to benefit underserved communities, and to transfer power and wealth from private corporations to the public.
Energy Democracy about us individuals and collectively taking control of where our energy comes from - ensuring that the sources of our energy, the impacts of our energy, and the decision-making around energy are determined by US and reflect our commitments to justice, equity, and environmental and human health.
Our campaigns in this area include:
DEFENDING THE COMPETITIVE SOLAR MARKET
We want community driven and community controlled energy - including in the case of renewable energy deployment.
Renewable Portfolio Case
We are challenging the Renewable Portfolio Standard Decision by the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission which illegally allowed PNM to select its own solar instead of allowing for a competitive process to determine the lowest-cost renewable resources.
City of Santa Fe Solar
We are advocating for Community-Controlled Solar for the City of Santa Fe - by challenging the City of Santa Fe's proposal to contract with PNM to solarize City facilities without ever having considered any alternative.
In both of these cases, PNM wants to own the solar because it
Our work around Energy Democracy is developing a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) Campaign based on the success of the seven states that have implemented the policy instrument. CCA allows communities to pool their aggregate energy demand and select their energy provider based on the criteria they determine. Community Choice Aggregation has enabled 91 communities in Illinois to achieve 100% renewable energy.
New Energy Economy is working to create on the ground renewable energy solutions that empower communities (both literally and figuratively) and foster economic development, environmental protection, human health, and energy democracy through energy choice and renewable energy deployment.
