ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A loud rally was at PNM’s front door Tuesday morning as people crashed the power company’s annual meeting to oppose rate hikes tied to a new power plan. More than 100 people were part of the protest at PNM’s annual shareholder meeting.

They want the state PRC to deny PNM’s plan for the San Juan Generating Plant near Farmington. The power company is now waiting for the state to decide if can shut down part of that plant. They want to cut the amount of coal they’re burning there by about 30-percent but to do that PNM would have to raise rates on average about $10 a month.

The state PRC is now trying to decide if it will approve it. Opponents argue that PNM’s plan doesn’t do enough to invest in wind and solar energy and they say it saddles rate payers with longer nuclear and coal investments contracts.

The PRC is expected to make a decision on the San Juan plan this month, So far there’s no date on when that will happen though.

Since the PRC starting hearing PNM’s plan for the San Juan Station, Albuquerque and Santa Fe City Councils along with Bernalillo County have all dropped support of the plan.

Protestors say that represents about 80-percent of the electricity generated at San Juan.
